Umzumbe Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr ST Gumede has urged the people of Umzumbe Municipality to register to vote on the 09th and 10th November 2013 between 08:00am and 17:00pm. The Mayor said, “The vote is their only voice to development which includes road, houses, water supply, government grants and many other benefits that have come due to the new government that was voted for by the people,” said Cllr Gumede. He further said that voting is one golden opportunity which many South Africans were denied an opportunity to exercise, “And that denial led to long years of deprived development.”
The Mayor emphasized that the reasons why we see development is due to voting. He urged the youth to take advantage of this registration weekend to even check in their details are correct on the voters roll. Some people have relocated for some or other reasons, “It is intrinsic to ensure that you check if you appear in the correct voting district.”
He highlighted the need for the youth to also visit their local Home Affairs offices to ensure that they have their identity documents and are ready for registration. “The ID is a very important document of your life. It is not called a book of life for nothing, it is because it is an operational document which is needed from people even in death.” “I cannot overemphasize the need for the youth to register and to participate in the upcoming elections next year,” said Cllr Gumede. He said that it is important for the youth to participate in the election of their own government.
He urged all the people of Umzumbe Municipality to go to their nearest voting district to register to vote and or to check their details on the voters roll.
The elections are expected to be held sometime next year between April and May. The Mayor said, “The people of Umzumbe must also take advantage of the SMS system of checking if they are registered by SMSing their ID number to 32810.”
