The youth of uMzumbe turned out in numbers to participate in one of the incredible sporting event in the municipal calendar, uMzumbe 2013 Turton Beach Games. The games were held on Saturday, 02 February 2013, in Turton beach (Mthwalume), Ward-10. Since its inception in 2008 Turton Beach Games has proven to be a great success. Over the years the event has scouted new sports talent in young people, developing the youth and curbing juvenile delinquencies.

Addressing the youth of uMzumbe at the event, Deputy Mayor, Councilor (Cllr) Nompilo Mweshe encouraged young people to love sports and to participate in it for the betterment of their lives and their communities.

Success of 2013 Umzumbe Beach Games

RUGBY CLASH: The heat was on when Rugby players fought for the ball to favour their team to win.

“We are very pleased by your attendance and magnificent talent you have shown in this year’s (2013) beach games. We therefore encourage all young people of uMzumbe to participate in sports, not only in soccer and netball, but in all sports codes made available to you by this government of the day. It is high time that, as the municipality we create a platform to encourage sports participation in all 19 wards of uMzumbe, as part of nourishing new talent, thus giving young people of uMzumbe opportunities to participate in the provincial and national sports’ events,” said Cllr Mweshe.

Deputy Mayor further offered her gratitude for all contributions made by the young people of uMzumbe in social transformation and development, and also acknowledged the challenges faced by the young people, giving them hope that youth development is at the heart of our government.

Young people competed in numerous activities such as Soccer, Netball, Volleyball, Rugby, Fishing, Athletics and Indigenous games. This has seen the winners taking home some great grand prices. Cluster A and cluster B showed high performance in different sport codes, thus taking most of the prices.

LADIES SOCCER: Ladies doing it for themselves during the Ladies soccer match held at the Turton Beach Games.  Go Ladies… Go ladies… Go ladies…

GOOD CATCH: The classic ladies sport, Netball was played with a lot of enthusiasm from the ladies, not minding the heat but focusing on scoring the ball in the net.  Well done Ladies!
